Support victims of the earthquake in Tibet

On April 14, 2010, an earthquake magnitude 7.1 hit the Yushu Prefecture, the largest Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Qinghai Province (China). Nearly 90% of the buildings of main city of the prefecture, Jiegu, was destroyed, leaving thousands of people trapped in the rubble and hundreds of thousands of people homeless.

At the moment, the living conditions of the population in the tent camps are still dramatic. Conditions of hygiene are extremely serious, there is no water and there are no toilet facilities. Breeding grounds for tuberculosis are endangering the health of thousands of people. In this period there is a real emergency: the freezing winter has brought the lives of these people to the limits of survival. At Yushu the winter lasts almost all year and in these months, the temperature goes down to minus 30°.

Our partners organisation for this project large Italian Humanitarian Organisation Asia Onlus has just concluded the fifth distribution of aid to the people of Yushu.

Trees for Tibet

Under the influence of climate changes an increasing degradation of the Tibetan plateau rangelands became a huge problem. Also the grasslands in Amdo, Qinghai province, suffer under this phenomenon. Increasing desertification in the whole province pushes more and more inhabitants to leave the grassland. Chinese government tries to modify the consequences of the worsening of the environment through various ecological campaigns, but this process will take a very long time and the effect is not everywhere noticable. An example of the situation is the biggest desert of the Hainan prefecture.

Education Project for Tibetan Nomads in Amdo (Qinghai Province, China)

Since the campaign to "Open up the west" (Xibu da kaifa) was introduced to the western parts of China in 2000, the central government started to initiate many changes in this area. The main aim of this campaign is to connect the western provinces with the infrastructure of the mainland. This shall bring large improvement of the socio-economical situation of the inhabitants of this remote areas, but at the same time it enables a better control of this regions by the central government.
